Calacatta marble is one of the varieties found in white marbles, it has a white crystalline groundmass which is normally crossedby grey or yellowish-colored veins (the latter being considered better quality) or even pink veins in some cases The veins may have a preferential direction depending on the cutting direction and thereby give the rock a definite orientation (rift). Calacatta marble may also range from pure white to ivory white (considered the best quality materials) to off-white (average quality) to white with gray shades (low quality) according to the different varieties.
The grain in Calacatta marble is generally fine or medium. The material is commonly used for interior wall cladding, flooring, and exterior facings. The surface of calacatta is generally polished, although honed is also used.
